Life on a Flash Drive

Posted in Tech .:. No comments yet

As a college student I do a lot of work in computer labs between classes. It’s handy to have preferences from applications saved so I don’t have to adjust settings everytime I want to use a particular program. With a 2GB flash drive (you can get one for around $30 after rebates from Buy.com these days), I can load a bunch of PortableApps onto it, sync up my files with SyncToy and be good to go. I also use PStart, which sits in the tray so I can quickly bring up a menu to launch the apps I need. You can either single click the icon to bring up a list or double-click that brings up a panel like this:

PStart

It’s really handy! I’d also like to mention that I downloaded a copy of PortableGIMP since I’m sitting in a lab right now and needed to make a screenshot. The GIMP has a nifty little feature that lets you capture a single window with ease (File ? Acquire ? Screenshot). I’m impressed.

This entry was inspired by a friend who recently experienced a hard drive failure on his laptop and thus is currently without a computer!
